Rules

The purpose of the following rules is to insure that participants in the Kids Triathlon complete the course safely and have a good time doing so! We feel all children who can complete the course are winners! USA Triathlon insures this event and has recommended these rules for safety reasons. The Race Director may disqualify anyone who does not comply.

I. OUTSIDE ASSISTANCE: Volunteers are stationed throughout the course to lend any assistance needed to insure participant safety and well-being.

II. COURSE: Each participant is encouraged to complete the entire prescribed course in order to receive a medal. Volunteers and signage are available throughout the course to show the way.

III. SWIM: Any stroke is allowed, there is no disqualification for style or stopping. The swim course is shallow enough so you can walk through the pool, but set a goal to swim the distance. All athletes should be comfortable in the water. Swim aids such as kickboards or flotation devices are NOT allowed. Younger age groups are permitted to hang on to the swim lane ropes or walk across the pool if assistance is needed to complete the swim.

IV. TRANSITION AREA: All equipment must be placed in the transition area before 7:30 am. From 8 am to 10 am ONLY PARTICIPANTS and transition volunteers will be allowed in the transition area. Bicycles must be walked in/out of the transition area, and are to be mounted and dismounted at a designated point outside the transition area, which will be clearly indicated and manned by volunteers. This is to keep kids from running into each other on bikes.

V. BIKE: Parents/Guardians are expected to ensure bicycles are in proper working order (i.e brakes, tires, inflation pressure, tire condition, chain, and pedals). In other words ….. DO A MAINTENANCE CHECK ON THE ATHLETE’S BIKE PRIOR TO THE EVENT. A helmet must be worn and chin straps secured at all times the participant is astride the bicycle and in the Transition Area. Parents/Guardians must ensure the helmet fit is proper for the athlete. PARTICIPANTS WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO DO THE BIKE PORTION OF THE RACE IF THEY DO NOT HAVE A HELMET. Riders must follow traffic laws. Pass to the left of riders being overtaken and then return to the right shoulder. When passing, please call out "on your left" to let the person in front of you know you are there. Riders must ride the full distance to the turn-around point and back. Drafting: Riding closely behind another bike and, therefore, using them as a windbreak is prohibited.

VI. RUN: Participants must run or walk the complete running course. Parents/guardians should ensure that the athlete has footwear that is suitable for running the designated distance.

VII. SPORTSMANSHIP: Infraction by participants or parents of any of the rules or exhibition of unsportsmanlike conduct will result in disqualification. This includes the use of profanity or rudeness before, during, or after the race.

VIII. RACE NUMBERS: Race numbers will be marked on each athlete's body during check-in, as well on a sticker to be placed on the front of their bike helmets and over the top-tube of athlete’s bike frame. Athletes will also have a race number that will need to be pinned to their shirt and worn during both the bike and the run. Please note: shirts must be worn during the event with the numbers pinned on it so we can get the athletes time.

IX. SUN PROTECTION: Due to the wave start, many athletes will have to wait before beginning the event. Parents/guardians should provide appropriate sun protection in the form of sunscreen and clothing.

X. ATHLETE HEALTH: Parents/guardians should ensure that the athlete is in a physical condition that will permit him/her to participate in the event without jeopardizing his/her health or that of other participants.

XI. HYDRATION: The weather in July can be hot and it is vital that your child consume water to prevent dehydration. There will be water available before, during, and following the event. It is suggested that your child place a full water bottle at their transition area. Any child showing signs of dehydration should be brought to a Parent/Guardian volunteer or Lifeguard on duty.

Numbering and Body Marking

Race Start

The race will begin at the pool. Each athlete will be assigned a swim start time, with the first swimmers starting at 8:00am. Athletes will be called to the swim staging area (concession picnic tables) at 7:45 am. Swimmers will be called by race number and name, (race number must be marked on the child's leg and arm - see body marking above). It is the athlete's responsibility to get to the staging area when they are called. Volunteers will assist the athletes in the staging area, but parents are not allowed in the staging area.

Athletes will be called from the staging area to the pool deck for the start of their heat. The athletes will swim their required number of laps and at the end of the swim they will walk through the kiddie pool gates to exit and enter the transition area.

Transition Area

WHAT IS THE TRANSITION AREA AND WHAT HAPPENS THERE?

In the sport of triathlon the Transition Area is like the hub in the center of a wheel with the swim, bike and run like the wheel spokes. The athlete passes through the Transition Area twice in the event. In the Transition Area the athlete moves from swimming to biking and then from biking to running.

Every athlete has a spot in the Transition Area where his/her bike, helmet, shoes/socks, clothes, towel and other gear is located. The triathlon begins at the pool. Following the swim the athlete moves to the Transition Area where he/she removes any swim equipment such as goggles and swim cap, quickly dries off (if they want to), puts on what is needed for the bike ride (shoes, helmet, shirt with race bib number), takes his/her bike and (walking the bike) exits the Transition Area following the sign that says BIKE OUT. Bathing suit removal is not permitted. Athletes put on shorts and shirt over their bathing suit, if choosing to do so.

After the ride the athlete returns to the Transition Area and (walking the bike) goes back to where his/her equipment is located. The bike is placed on the ground, helmet and other riding equipment is removed, and the athlete prepares for the run. Runners may jog to the RUN OUT sign in the Transition Area, watching for bikes and other runners. The triathlon finishes at the end of the run.

Transition Area Preparation

The transition area is located in the parking lot next to the pool. Each athlete will have an assigned spot according to their race number. Athletes should have their transition area equipment (i.e., bike, shoes, etc) set up at 7:25 am. Be sure to stay clear of the athletes during the race! In order to make sure everyone has room in the transition area, each athlete should use only the minimum amount of space required to place their equipment.

Everyone associated with the Naper Carriage Hill Swim & Racquet Club Kids Triathlon is anticipating a wonderful event. Good luck to all the participants!

At the time of check-in your child's race number (found in the race packet) will be marked on his/her leg and arm. These markings will be used to identify your child's race number at the start of the swim. Plus kids think this is cool.
